General Mandarin Courses

These courses are designed for students who wish to be able to communicate confidently and effectively in Mandarin, to improve their grades at school, and to succeed in their exams.

The main focus is on developing the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

In class, your child will be provided with plenty of opportunities to practise his/her language skills through a wide range of interesting exercises, interactive activities, and role-plays.

We offer a variety of courses in Mandarin to suit all levels, needs, and objectives:

Mandarin School Support - For Local, ESF or International School Students
Level *: Schedule:
* Students are grouped by Form, curriculum (Local / ESF / International School), and level of ability.
Forms 3-7 / Years 9-13
  • Once or twice weekly x 1.5 hours
  • 2 - 5 times weekly during school holidays

For students who need additional support to make really significant progress at school and/or improve their overall Mandarin performance.
During these courses, your child will:

  • reinforce his/her language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing;
  • practise his/her oral communicative skills extensively and learn to correctly express his/her thoughts and ideas;
  • develop his/her reading comprehension skills;
  • enhance his/her writing skills - with appropriate marking and feedback.

Emphasis is on developing competence as well as boosting self-confidence.

Your child may also join our summer camp to China and get a unique chance to immerse himself/herself in Mandarin language and Chinese culture and develop his/her languages skills further.

MANDARIN IN ACTION (ORAL SKILLS ENHANCEMENT) - For Local, ESF or International School Students
Level *: Schedule:

Forms 3-7 / Years 9-13
  • Once or twice weekly x 1.5 hours
  • 2 - 5 times weekly during school holidays

For students who want to improve their conversational skills and fluency.
This programme is the ideal complement to any school studies, and a must for students who need more speaking practice to be better prepared for their oral examinations.
According to his/her level, your child will:

  • refine his/her listening comprehension skills;
  • develop his/her speaking skills and learn to communicate appropriately in a range of situations and for a variety of purposes;
  • learn to be more confident when speaking in a group or in front of an audience;
  • practise expressing his/her views fluently and coherently on engaging topics and contemporary issues through exciting group debates.

Students must be prepared to express themselves in Mandarin at all times during class. Emphasis is on reaching a higher level of accuracy, fluency and confidence.

Your child may also join our summer camp to China and get a unique chance to immerse himself/herself in Mandarin language and Chinese culture and develop his/her languages skills further.

READING & WRITING SKILLS ENHANCEMENT - Local School Curriculum

For students who are learning Mandarin at a local school and wish to enhance their knowledge and use of Chinese simplified characters, while building strong reading and writing skills.
During these courses, your child will:

  • enhance his/her reading skills, including comprehension and recitation with correct pronunciation;
  • cultivate an interest in Chinese literature and develop a desire to pursue further reading;
  • expand his/her writing skills through the study of contemporary works and the practice of writing essays, poems or his/her own stories.
READING & WRITING SKILLS ENHANCEMENT – ESF / International School Curriculum

Forms 1-7 / Years 7-13
  • Once or twice weekly x 1.5 hours
  • 2 - 5 times weekly during school holidays

For students who are learning Mandarin at an ESF or International School and wish to develop their ability to read and write Chinese characters.
During these courses, and according to his/her level, your child will:

  • review the different types of characters (origin, stroke order, individual components, compound characters and common radicals);
  • study how compounds are formed and the way that different ideas and concepts are expressed;
  • enlarge his/her range of characters (and the words formed with them);
  • increase his/her reading and comprehension skills - from reading short passages to more complex texts;
  • develop his/her ability to write his/her own passages, poems, and stories, following the basic rules and conventions such as paragraph indentation and punctuation.

The overall objective is to guide your child from being able to read the words, to working out their meaning, to completely mastering them.

Through these courses, your child will not only increase his/her ability to read and write but also acquire a better appreciation of the richness of Chinese language and literature, and gain a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and traditions.
